Welcome
Thank you for coming. My name is Mark Sheridan and this is the Southport Elearning CoP.
I have been involved with eLearning for over a dozen years. I have taught technology courses at Metro College and been involved in eLearning provincial development teams for over a decade.
My current position is Education Consultant for Knowledge Innovation where I develop online and offline education.
We are here to see what interest there is for a local eLearning Community of Practice.
First, I will tell you why I'm a big fan of eLearning CoPs.
I am always looking for feedback. I send drafts of my work out on a regular basis. Getting constant feedback during the process improves the end product.
The second big reason I like CoPs is it provides me with a list of peers that I may hopefully turn to when I get stuck. I sure many of you don't get stuck, but if you do, it is nice to have someone who has likely come across your problem share their experience.
As Builders of Learning we need feedback to guide our process. That's why I think a local CoP has great value; knowledgeable colleagues nearby and willing to share when you (and they) need to talk through a problem . . . when you're in a bind is there anything better ?
eLearning can be a tough gig because learner engagement is tough to measure. In a classroom you can see right away whether students are engaged or not. ---that is our challenge
Those are some of my own reasons.
Which brings me to Why an eLearning CoP at Southport ?
Again 2 reasons:
The Provincial Elearning CoP which is run by Steven Siebold.
How many of you have attended the online Provincial CoP which Steven hosts?
My hope is that we can take best of the online CoP and build upon it: that this will provide us with a place we can share our challenges and a peer group that we can be comfortable with to share when things go wrong.
The other reason for a Southport CoP was overhearing Amy and Elaine talking about captivate and course development just outside my cubicle, here were fellow education developers who worked to alleys down from my cubicle yet we had no connection. Had I not popped up my head from my cubicle gopher hole no connection would have been made and .
The long and short of it is that we are not alone.
I am hoping as we get to know each other we can share our challenges as well as our successes ( and if your like me you have many challenges to share).
In order to share with each other I think it is important to get to know each other better.
So now an activity to get to know each other.
----------------------
The term Community of Practice was developed by cultural anthropologists to describe a group that shares information and experiences for their own improvement.
SO my process to borrow from PDSA is
Plan
Do
Send out for feedback
Act
-----------------------------------------------
Getting to Know Each Other ( You need to interview atleast 2 people you don't know)
So now I thought we would do an activity that would help us to get to know each other.
I want you to find someone you don't know and get to know them.
Answer these questions:
- What are you working on that you would share?
- What are you proficient in eLearning wise?
- Are you interested in supporting others? What is the easiest way to get a hold of you? Where are you located ?
- What could you use help with ( We know you really don't require it?) ?
- What do you want to get out of the Southport CoP ?
Now post them where: ??????? Conversation
